The Joburg Theatre has been one of the first to purchase Philips Selecon PLCYC-2LEDs in South Africa. The ten new fixtures are being used for the magical production Aladdin, a pantomime by Jannice Honeyman which runs from October 30th right through to the holiday season.
Joburg Theatre were looking for a LED Cyc light solution to light up the cyclorama, the large white backdrop on stage which changes colour during shows. The purchase had to arrive on time for the annual panto Aladdin which is a feast of fun with spectacular costumes, singing and lighting effects. This year the production includes Jeremy Mansfield in the role of the Evil Abanazar.
“We compared the PLCYC-2LEDs with similar fixtures and found them to be more suited to theatre application and surprisingly more affordable,’ said Enos Ramoroko, Technical Manager at the Joburg Theatre. “With no need for labour intensive rigging (fewer and lighter units) and almost nonexistent maintenance, we can only hope to buy more of them to put a smile on the crew.’
Ramoroko says that Graham McLusky, the lighting designer for Aladdin, is very happy with the intensity that the fixtures give.
“And I couldn’t be more pleased with the choice we made,’ he added. “Set up will be a cruise with less cabling and relatively much lighter lights.’
Dave Whitehouse from DWR Distribution supplied the new equipment. “The advantage of the Philips Selecon PLCYC-2LED is that there is no lamp replacement, you don’t need dimmers and they’re extremely green because of the amount of electricity you use,’ Whitehouse said.
Whitehouse says the person behind the lighting desk will appreciate the fixtures most. Gone are the days that streaks of white shine through because the filters or gels have burnt! There is also a three year guarantee against premature failing.
Delivering a smooth even beam, the PLCYC2 blends intense washes of colour on a cyclorama. Using LED source technology combined with a properly shaped asymmetrical reflector, the PLCYC2 delivers consistent and powerful light distribution without the compromising performance of vertical or horizontal spreader lenses.
The PLCYC2 uses the same proven LED engines as the Philips Selecon PL1, PL3, PLFRESNEL1, PLPROFILE1 and the PLCYC1 meaning colour matching is simplified across the stage. The user interface is the same ensuring ease of use.
Fewer luminaires to cover the cyclorama, less power and no dimmer circuits makes the PLCYC2 the obvious choice for lighting a large sized cyclorama.
