Audio-Technica Europe’s Technical Support and Product Manager, Alexander Lepges, presented a new style of thinking illustrated by Audio-Technica’s involvement in several major global sporting events. Audio-Technica challenged the typical uses of their microphones by burying lapel mics in sand pits and lining running tracks with boundary mics.

Regarding “all microphones as instruments’, Alexander illustrated the importance of the microphone as the first port of call in shaping the tone of one’s sound. Using a bit of tongue-in-cheek, Alexander debunked, many of the myths, truths and strengths of the “top’ microphone brands and illustrated how Audio-Technica has improved and developed their own microphones.

Prosound gave away a set of Audio-Technica headphones to four lucky winners who attended the seminars. Motlalepule Makhate of The Market Theatre, Michael Isaacs of DB- Audio, Bheki of Noise and Jose of New Age Entertainment each walked away with a pair of the limited edition ATH-M50 reds which are hot in demand in SA at the moment.

Prosound also took the seminar to the students of The Academy of Sound Engineering where it was described as “the best guest lecture of the year’.

“It was my first time visiting South Africa so I wasn’t certain what to expect. I was impressed by the number of interested people who met with us to listen, but more importantly to talk to us – whether it was a student, a live sound engineer, a DJ, a broadcast engineer or a sales person in a music shop. It was a great value for us [Audio-Technica] to learn so much in such a short time on how things are done here in SA. The new ideas will definitely flow into the design of the next generation of products from us,’ says Alexander.

“It was really a pleasure to welcome Alex to our shores,’ says Grant Scott, Prosound. “I was amazed at how he kept people riveted in their seats for hours talking about microphones. His presentation style and topics were refreshing. We hope to have him back soon!’
